June is National Pride Month, a time for celebrating diversity, inclusion, and the rich history of the LGBTQ+ community.
Did you know that LGBTQ+ seniors often face unique challenges?
Nearly 50% of LGBTQ+ seniors feel a lack of companionship, and over 40% feel isolated from others, compared to 20% and 27% of their heterosexual counterparts, respectively.
LGBTQ+ seniors are more likely to experience mental health issues, with 31% reporting depressive symptoms compared to 16% of heterosexual seniors.
21% of LGBTQ+ older adults live at or below the poverty line, compared to 16% of heterosexual seniors.
Over 20% of LGBTQ+ seniors report experiencing discrimination from healthcare providers.
These challenges highlight the importance of supportive and inclusive services. DSCC is committed to creating an affirming environment for all seniors.
We are proud to be a SAGE-certified platinum member, which means we have met the highest standards of care for LGBTQ+ elders. This certification reflects our dedication to providing culturally competent services to our LGBTQ+ community members.
Join us in celebrating Pride Month by recognizing and supporting the vibrant lives of LGBTQ+ seniors.
Together, we can ensure that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can age with dignity and pride.

KSC Volunteer, Greg Lind has been delivering meals to seniors in Kane County for almost ten years.
When seeing the impact of delivering meals, Greg thought, “This is really helpful to the people receiving–and probably feels good to the person delivering too.” So Greg started delivering Meals on Wheels in Kane County.
“Sometimes they’ll answer the door and not be looking as happy as they could be,” he says. “By the time you leave, they’re smiling. And you’ve brightened their day. And your day too.”
Beyond delivering meals, Greg has joined the board at AgeGuide representing Kane County to help recognize how to best assist people as they age.
